Helge Esch

Energy Systems Analyst & Modeler

Hi, I'm Helge, a freelancer based in Munich & Berlin.

After finishing my Master's at DTU, I joined the energy world in 2020, focusing on energy markets modeling and design, risk modeling, and quantitative scenario comparison.

I love solving problems in re-usable, modular ways, building frameworks and packages that scale across studies and platforms rather than one-off scripts.

Have a look at my projects below, and connect with me on LinkedIn.

Energy Markets Python Framework Design Risk Modeling

Projects

Open-source tools for energy system analysis, scenario comparison, and modeling support.

Why I built this

mesqual — After years of rebuilding importers, analysis pipelines, and visualization scripts for every new modeling platform and study, I realized the high-level workflow is always the same. mesqual is my attempt at a unified package I can use across platforms and studies, continuously extending a shared library of modular components.
energy-repset — Identifying representative years/months/weeks/days kept coming up throughout my projects. After tackling it enough times, I wanted to formalize the approach as a unified framework. I re-read one of my favorite papers and got the inspiration from Warren B. Powell's "A Unified Framework for Stochastic Optimization", so I formulated it and wrapped it in a modular package.
captain-arro — For map visualizations in my mesqual studies I wanted customizable animated flow arrows, so I built a small package around it.

mesqual

+ ecosystem

A Pythonic framework for energy scenario comparison and quantitative analysis. Platform-agnostic, fully modular, and built to extend.

A unified framework and modular Python package for representative subset selection in multi-variate time-series spaces.

Create beautiful, customizable, animated SVG arrows for web interfaces with just a few lines of Python code.
